Greetings from Africa!                                                                         27 October 2004

It is amazing how quickly human beings accommodate to just about anything. My new vision through the right eye is still amazing – when I go to the trouble to think about it – but I don’t think about it so much as just one week ago. Similarly, the whole ‘living in South Africa’ thing has pretty much just become normal life. Driving on the left side of the road, the sun coming from the north rather than the south has all just become the way things are. Speaking of driving on the left, I got the opportunity to do that this past weekend as Rev. Ruth and her husband went away to celebrate their first anniversary and loaned me one of their cars. So, I got to do some shopping, drive myself to the gym (where I was careful not to overdo it), and pick Erton and Lydia up after they finished ministering in Sunrise Park. My preaching went well and I was blessed with some very nice comments. I always find it very encouraging to remember the Scriptural promise that the Word never returns to God void.

As I mentioned last week, the counseling has resumed with some regularity. It is amazing how deep and wide the need seems to be, and doing it both ‘feels right’ and seemingly is bearing fruit. It is really quite wonderful to find a place and a ministry where those two things go together.

This evening I went with Rev. Ruth and her husband to the house of a local artist who was hosting an exhibition of paintings done by a friend of his, who was also there. Both of them are, in my amateur opinion, very good, and the paintings on exhibit were both very good and reasonably priced (especially after converting prices in Rand to dollars!). The house is on the grounds of a former estate established by one of the famous men who helped found South Africa. It is some distance up in the hills and has a wonderful view, looking north, of Rustenburg and the mines beyond the town. A rain storm passed through which brought both some much needed water and some pretty good photo opportunities (see attached photo). God even illuminated the scene with a nice full moon!

Tomorrow I go see the surgeon again, and among other things we will discuss doing the left eye. All things considered I am inclined to go ahead right away. My satisfaction with the vision in that eye has taken a big plunge since the real world showed up in my right eye. Right now everything is nicely set up – I know the surgeon, the hospital, and I don’t have to travel for two months. So the next time I am back in the States I will have the great pleasure of not only seeing many of you again, but of really SEEING you again!

Love from Africa

Lary
