Greetings from Africa! 26 Mar. 2004
Sunday was 'Human Rights Day' in South Africa, so naturally I preached on that subject. The message, in brief, was that we are to live like Jesus, who gave up His rights for the sake of others. A number of people expressed their appreciation for the message, and at least one person was deeply impacted.
On Monday I went with Pastor Edward (you saw his picture last week) to his house in a place called "Mogwase" (pronounced 'muh-qua-say'). We spent a lot of time discussing his vision for teaching in Africa, and how I could help him. We made much progress, and I'm planning on returning for a few days again next week. Pastor Edward's vision is LARGE, but God is infinite and the world has been changed before by a small number of people with a vision inspired by Him. God has already shown Pastor Edward a lot of favor in the rapid growth of his churches (and He also gave him a very nice house at a bargain price). On Tuesday evening a group from his church meets for Bible study, and he asked me to teach. Well, we ARE to be prepared 'in season and out of season', and everything went well. At the end I told the people they were not allowed to leave until they posed for a picture, and that those who did would get a free trip to America via email. Everyone stayed for the picture (attached). Every night at Edward's house we all met in the 'lounge' (living room) for worship along with a Bill Gaither video. You simply cannot imagine how well known and popular American worship and teaching is in South Africa.
(The other picture is from Pastor Edward's house. I just thought the branch with all the nests was quite interesting).
On Wednesday the Methodist 'Forty Days of Purpose" small group came over for a 'braii' (=barbeque). South Africans LOVE their meat, so there were few who missed out. We all had a good time and, of course, good food. Many brought their children, and there were no fights and only one threw up, so all-in-all it was quite fine.
Last night the seven week course: "Fresh Bread from the Word of God - No More Dry Toast" began. I am so glad I had the opportunity to teach in St. Luke Church during 2003 and prepare all the materials, which I have with me here. There was a good group from several churches, and all went well. I look forward to the rest of the sessions, and possibly future courses as well.
Love from Africa,
Lary
